April Book Club - The Rules of Magic

Another interesting discussion took place on Wednesday, February 28th at the book club meeting at the Stowe Free Library.  The book under discussion was “The Power” by Naomi Alderman.  This book won the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.  The premise of the book is that women (teenage girls really) start to have power; electrical skills that can be used to fight back against abuse – physical, mental and emotional.  After years of being thought of as the “weaker” gender, girls are fighting back.  The story follows several girls who team together as well as one man trying to document the events.  Brought forward many feelings and thoughts!

Our next book pick is “The Rules of Magic” by Alice Hoffman.  Many of you may be familiar with Hoffman’s other works including “Practical Magic” (both book and movie)- this is the prequel! We are excited to see where Sally and Gillian got their knowledge, and see how the Aunts started down their path.
