Inclement Weather Policy

The Stowe Free Library is a service that community members depend upon. When possible, the Library will remain open during inclement weather to provide information services to the public.

The staff of the Stowe Free Library may close the library if:

  • The Town of Stowe offices are closed
  • The Stowe  public  schools call for a early dismissal due to weather
  • If  weather is creating significant issues with the Library's heating or cooling system

When it is necessary for the Library to close, Library staff should make all effort to

  • Contact the Town of Stowe offices, if open, including the Town Manager
  • Contact the Chair of the Board of Trustees
  • Post a notice on the library doors, when possible
  • Record a notice on the library answering machine
  • Post the closing on the Library’s web site
The Director of the Stowe Free Library will be responsible for determining whether or not the library should close in situations other than those above. In the absence of the Director, the next most senior staff person as determined by length of service to the library will make the decision.

All library programming should continue as scheduled if the library is open, except if the presenter of the program is unable or unwilling to travel. If the library staff is reasonably able to conduct the program in absence of the presenter – for example, with a Baby and Toddler or Pre-School Story Time or a book discussion group – that program should take place, as scheduled, without the presenter.

In the case of a library closure for inclement weather, the Stowe Free Library will follow the procedures for compensation set out in the Town of Stowe Personnel Policy.
