Award-winning Children's Books
The American Library Association announced the following 2010 Children's and Young Adult Book Awards on Monday, January 18th: The Caldecott Medal for picture book illustration was awarded to Jerry Pinkney for his book The Lion &the Mouse. Caldecott Honors were given to Pamela Zagarenski for Red Sings from Treetops and Marla Frazee for All the World. The John Newbery Award for the most distinguished work of children's fiction was awarded to Rebecca Stead for When You Reach Me, with Newbery Honors going to Jacqueline Kelly for The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, Philip Hoose for Claudette Colvin: twice toward justice; Grace Lin for Where the Mountain Meets the Moon , and Rodman Philbrick for The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg. The Geisel Award for early readers went to Geoffrey Hayes for The Big No-No; the Coretta Scott King Award for best African-American literature went to Vaunda Nelson for Bad News for Outlaws; the Siebert Medal for a distinguished nonfiction book went to Tanya Lee Stone for Almost Astronauts; the YALSA awards for young adult literature went to Libba Bray for Going Bovine and Deborah Heiligman for Charles & Emma, the Darwins leap of faith ; and the Belpre Award for Hispanic literature went to Julia Alvarez for Return to Sender and Pat Mora for Book Fiesta.
