Joe Citro and Spooky Vermont Tales, October 14 at 7:30pm

Joe CitroThe Stowe Free Library will host Joe Citro, Vermont’s chronicler of the strange and supernatural, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. as part of its “Face to Face: Meet the Author” series.

Joe Citro is a native Vermonter, novelist, and public radio commentator who has done a lot to keep New England’s history and folklore alive. His 12 books include five novels of suspense, three volumes of historical oddities, a collection of regional humor, two travel guides, and a co-edited book of essays.

Citro’s classic and best-selling Green Mountain Ghosts, Ghouls and Unsolved Mysteries, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1994, is regarded as the most comprehensive collection of offbeat Vermont lore ever assembled. It was supplemented by Passing Strange, Green Mountains, Dark Tales, The Vermont Ghost Guide, Curious New England, Cursed in New England, and Weird New England. His novels — three of which have been optioned for motion pictures — present a dark and mystical side of the Vermont experience. They are Shadow Child, Guardian Angels, The Gore, Lake Monsters and Deus-X.

Citro has had a commentary series on Vermont Public Radio since 1992. He was born in Chester, Vt., and has held a variety of jobs, from pumping gas to landscaping, teaching English as a second language, hospitality work, counseling, and working in state government. Since becoming a professional writer in 1987, he has taught in local colleges, lectured widely, and appeared on regional and national radio and television.

Admission to the library event is free; use the rear entrance to reach the community meeting room. The Friends of the Stowe Free Library will provide refreshments. An informal discussion, book sale and signing will follow the talk. Information: Stephanie Chase, 253-6145.
