Manga and Anime: a guide for the new Otaku

Relatively new to the library and most of us Locals is manga and anime. These two things are a central part of Japanese culture. Manga, is something similar to a comic book, but with a few differences, while anime is the animated version of the manga.
For those of you who think that because these are cartoons, that they are below your reading level, I plead you think again. Many of these have subplots and themes just as mature as any book you may read. Of course, just like a normal book, some are catered towards certain age levels, so you will have to find a series that you enjoy yourself.
Manga is just like a book, only with lots of very good artwork depicting the scenes. Sometimes, certain ones that have not yet become huge in America will be left to right, like they were in Japan. This may take a little getting used to, but is really no different. A good series to begin with, for teens and adults, is Full Metal Alchemist. It has all the elements of a good Manga, humor, action, depth, and much more, and also has an anime series.
Good anime is everywhere, personal favorites include all the studio Ghibli films which are good for all, and Inuyasha which is catered towards a slightly older audience, and Naruto, which may be my all time favorite and is good for all ages.
So for all of you out there, give manga a shot, you may find that you like it, or not, but either way, you have nothing to lose.
